VHF radios

Post by glennpretorius »

My sling 2 avionics package consists of one VHF radio. (GNC 255) I am uncomfortable with not having a second VHF radio but having a problem justifying the extra expense. A second system has obvious advantages as it is a separate complete system and provides a higher level of redundancy. So I suppose it comes down to reliability.

Any advice welcome...

I think a second GNC 255 would be overkill, but there are several other lower-priced options that don't have a second NAV radio:
GNC 255: $4,695 (plus second NAV, which may be overkill)
GTR 225: $2,195 (if you need a certified comm radio)
GTR 200: $1,199 (if your Sling is experimental)
GTR 20: $995 (if you want to control it through your G3X and don't need a second display)
Yaesu FTA-550 $199 (if you're ok with a handheld backup)

Personally, I'd install a second radio and carry a handheld with me for complete redundancy, but that's just me.

Thanks, I like the idea of the GTR 20 remote mounted as a second VHF radio. This is probably
the option I shall go for.
