Prop Options Electric VS Hydraulic

Post by Montreal »

Thought I would start this discussion because I couldn’t find much info online regarding compatible prop options for the Rotax 915/916 Sling HW. I have only flown planes with hydraulic prob (manual).
Is anyone familiar with the cost diff between MT electric vs manual prop? Any Hartzell options? So far all I know is you need a module to interface electric prop with rotax engine and the factory needs to know which option you prefer for control configuration.

I can't answer your questions but I'll chime in with some info since I was just in communication with Duc about prop options for the TSi. I assume the same options would apply for the HW.

For a 916 TSi, they recommended the 4-blade hydraulic Flashblack-3-R or Tigerblack-3-R. There's a significant price difference between the two, my quotes (in EUR) correspond to $12500 for the Flashblack and $16600 for the Tigerblack, including governor, spinner and shipping, but not tax. Both are also available in electric versions, but they said "electric is no cheaper and more complex, go with the hydraulic if your engine allows".

I seem to remember JP saying he had tried both on his 915 HW, and the Flashblack performed better (look for a post on the Facebook forum), although I think the Tigerblack-3 is a new version that they say is better. (It better be a lot better given it's 1/3 more expensive...)

Thanks for info @lutorm ... I'll check out DUC at some 2025 airshows. From what I can see electric is likely $8000 more than hydraulic by the time you factor in Rotax SCU + Electric prop.

In talking with TAF the other day about options it was mentioned that Linda is working with Duc on a prop option for the 916. I have no other information specifically to the HW but I should be getting my Duc Flashblack delivered next week for my L600. All in with an APR-1 controller is about $12k.
